Music Money: Part 4 — Numbers Game

No matter what business you are in, you are basically in sales. Sales is hard work. It takes many No’s to get to the Yes’s.  It is no different for the music business. You may have your music rejected many times before it is accepted. You may also have thousands of listens before someone actually buys your download.  It can get very frustrating as you are starting to develop your music career. Too many people expect instant results, which realistically do not happen. There is an old saying, “It takes 20 years to be an overnight success.”

Even Britney Spears spent years developing herself before she ever landed a record deal. Britney spent years singing at county fairs, going to auditions and practicing. She then landed on the Mickey Mouse Club which helped get her the attention she needed to land a record deal.  The majority of her time was spent working below anyone’s radar….but she kept going.

Besides being in the music business, I am also in the insurance business….it all works the same. You have to keep going even when people say NO.  The more people or places you contact, the more people have the ability to say yes.

So my fellow indie musicians, get out there and start promoting yourselves!! Get your music on every website you can. Find online radio stations that accept indie submissions. Play gigs!  Do whatever you can to get your music out there… may take a long time, but if you keep going, success is inevitable….BUT don’t make the mistake of thinking a record deal is the ultimate goal….record deals are not all what they are cracked up to be. We live in a time where you can develop a music career 100% on your own….just ask Ingrid Michaelson!
